Blowfish for Breakfast

Shark Alley Hobos

A sea shanty inspired by the accidental ingestion of blowfish (“fugu” in Japanese) while on vacation in Japan. Perhaps the first time “tetrodotoxin” has been used in a song--and probably the last…

For Halloween, singer songwriter multi-instrumentalist Che Prasad is releasing a new song on El Che Records entitled “No Such Thing As Frankenstein”. The song imagines what it would be like if Dr. Frankenstein was married, and the stresses that building a monster would have on a relationship. Che Prasad explains “It’s also about child rearing”. He quickly adds that being married to him is nothing like being married to Dr. Frankenstein. His wife was not available for comment.

The cover art was done by Marin artist Ken Jacobs (the Shark Alley Hobos's own Smokey Joe!) and features a Frankenstien-enhanced image of Che’s own daughter, Indigo. A girl with a love of science, Indigo said, “I hope the song is not about me”. Indigo is Che’s only child.

Che Prasad also notes that “The Shark Alley Hobos’ last full album was a musical tribute to the movie Jaws and had many of the same challenges that piecing together a Frankenstein monster might have”.

Enjoy Che's new Halloween single!

While making their first (and last) appearance at the Northern California Pirate Festival, the Hobos were missing their fallen leader Mike Lee. Squinty and One Eyed Jack remembered that they had always wanted to form a Prince tribute band called Darling Mikki and the Beautiful Ones. While reminiscing over a Mai Tais and a giant turkey leg, Squinty and One Eyed Jack grew tired of watching the other Hobos watching the belly dancing act—and began to dream big. What if the Hobos did the entire Purple Rain album sea shanty style? Within minutes, the sea shanty version of When Doves Cry was born! Will the dream of Purple Rain sea shanty style--maybe with belly dancers--ever be realized? Probably not, but reality has never stopped the Shark Alley Hobos…

Raise a glass to the Purple One and sing along with the chorus!

Men of the Cloth was written by Mikie Lee and Che while they were in England taking a songwriting course from one of the Shark Alley Hobos’ music heroes, Ray Davies from the Kinks. Mikie and Che were assigned the task of writing a song for the two priest characters for a musical based on the 1963 British movie The Servant. Ray laughed out loud during the performance which Che and Mikie thought could be a good sign or bad sign but were too afraid to ask…

This Shark Alley Hobos song has a few surprises. The coolest one is that the bridge is sung by our dearly missed leader Mikie Lee (from a demo he and Che recorded in England while writing the song). It was an honor to sing along with Mikie once again! At the very end of the song you can hear Mikie and Che walking the grounds of an English castle talking about nothing in particular, a conversation that is now a treasured moment in time.

The song features some archaic phrases that might need some explaining such as:

  • Men of the Cloth: priests

  • Admirals of the red: heavy drinkers

  • Beat your gums: idle chatter

  • Tooth music: making loud sounds while eating

We hope you enjoy this new song that reunites Mikie Lee with his crew of Hobos!
